Pollina

Not far from Cefalù, between Madonie and the sea, there is a typical norman village: Pollina.

Pollina offers an amazing panoramic view and history rich in charm, from Greek colonisation to the legend of a love escape in which a woman and a vizier decided to fulfil their romantic dream in these very places.

Thanks to its strategic position, the village boasts a particular panorama: looking the hinterland, Pollia is entirly surounded by the Madonie and its fascinating villages, such as Castelbuono, on the other side, the gaze turns towards the sea, with favourbale weather, allows one to admire the Aeolian island.

Through the streets of the town monuments in romanic style can be admired, such as the Church of San Giuliano, Pollina’s patron. The first traces of the castle date back to 1081, and all the remains nowadays are the perimeter walls and the tower at the top of the peak.

The houses of the settlement built during the following centuries are located behind the walls. At the bottom of the tower, in the 1970s, a theatre was built in Hellenistic style to emphasise the connection of the village with Magna Graecia.

The theatre was named Pietrarosa because it was built with a particular type of rock that takes on a pinkish shade at sunset.
